You are invited to participate in our next Hackathon! It will be a joint Teradata Labs & UCSD event which will be held at the UCSD campus during the weekend of March 3rd. The signup will be limited to the first 100 responders. Attendance is restricted to current UCSD students and Teradata employees.

Theme

The theme for this hackathon event is Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Services. Leverage the complete Teradata product portfolio together with the new voice, natural language and image recognition AWS services, or bring-your-own deep learning and advanced analytics tools. The challenge is to produce smart and valuable solutions for the community using the data you bring. Here is an excellent opportunity to show off your skills in machine learning algorithms and explore the awesome power of Teradata technologies in combination with cutting edge cloud services and open source frameworks.

Environment

We will be providing a Teradata Unified Data Architecture environment (Teradata, Aster, Hadoop, Presto) along with supporting services (Listener, Viewpoint, Aster AppCenter, DataMover, Query Grid, Ecosystem Manager, and TDRest) in Amazon AWS so you will not need to worry about infrastructure, just bring your data. In addition, we expect participants to utilize various AWS Artificial Intelligence services (such as Alexa, Lex, Polly, Rekognition, Machine Learning etc.). However, feel free to introduce other technologies if you think there is a good reason for it.

The Contest Rules and Agreement are below. By participating in this contest, you agree to be legally bound by the Contest Rules and Agreement. No purchase is necessary to win a prize. This offer is void where and as prohibited by law and is subject to all applicable laws and regulations. The sponsor of this contest is Teradata with offices at 10000 Innovation Drive, Miamisburg, Ohio 45342. Note that Teradata employees will be among the contestants.

This contest to identify skilled analytic developers (the “Contest”) is sponsored by Teradata Operations, Inc. with offices at 17095 Via del Campo, San Diego, CA 92127-1711 (“Teradata”) for students currently enrolled at the University of California, San Diego (“UCSD”) and Teradata employees. The software to be used in the Contest will be hosted by Teradata on Amazon Web Services (“AWS”) at [fill in URL for contest site] (the “Contest Site”). Teradata software engineers (the “Judges”) will choose the winning entry from eligible entries in accordance with this Agreement. The Contest is subject to all applicable Federal, state and local laws and regulations and is void where and as prohibited. All dates, times, and locations are subject to change and will be posted on the registration site or sent to invitees via email.

1. How to Enter. To register for the Contest, you may complete the online registration form available at the registration site. The first 100 eligible persons to complete the registration form before 24:00 Pacific Time on February 28, 2017 are invited to participate in the Contest.

2. Eligibility. Eligibility to register for the Contest is limited to individuals who meet all of the following criteria: (1) are eighteen 18 years of age or older prior to registration, (2) at the time of registration are enrolled in UCSD or are employees of Teradata or its affiliates. Eligibility to participate in the Contest and win is limited to the first 100 eligible registrants who meet all of preceding registration requirements as well as the following criteria: (4) agree to this Agreement and (5) comply with all of the rules, terms, and conditions of this Agreement. Persons who meet all 5 criteria are referred to as “Eligible Contestants”. Teradata's determination of the eligibility of registrants is final and binding.

3. How to Play. The Contest will be held at UCSD in CSE Building, Room #1202 (the “Contest Room”) with virtual participation by some Teradata employees. Eligible Contestants will be given access to: (1) the Contest Room from 17:00 Pacific Time on March 3, 2017 to 9:00 Pacific Time on March 5, 2017 (the “Contest Period”) with some late evening closure, and (2) access to Teradata and AWS software services hosted on the Contest Site. The “Challenge” will be to design, implement, and demonstrate a solution to a data analytics problem utilizing artificial intelligence and/or cognitive services. Eligible Contestants are responsible for providing the data to be analyzed. The Eligible Contestant’s must present and demonstrate their solution to the Challenge to the Judges in the Contest Room sometime between about 9:00 and 11:00 Pacific Time on March 5, 2017. Eligibility of a solution to the Challenge is limited to a solution that meets all of the following criteria: (1) provides a workable solution to a data analytics problem relevant to the Challenge, (2) is submitted by Eligible Contestant(s) during the Contest Period, and (3) CONSISTS ONLY OF (A) THE TERADATA AND AWS SOFTWARE SERVICES PROVIDED AT THE CONTEST SITE AND (B) THE ELIGIBLE CONTESTANT’S ORIGINAL CODE (WHETHER CREATED DURING OR PRIOR TO THE CONTEST PERIOD) AND/OR ELIGIBLE OPEN SOURCE CODE. “ELIGIBLE OPEN SOURCE CODE” REFERS TO SOURCE CODE THAT IS AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET AND SUBJECT TO A CLEARLY POSTED LICENSE THAT PERMITS THE ELIGIBLE CONTESTANT TO LICENSE THE SOLUTION TO RECIPIENTS OF THE CODE PURSUANT TO THE APACHE LICENSE VERSION 2.0, January 2004 http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0. Any Entry that does not meet the above criteria is disqualified. Note, for example, it is permissible for a solution to include source code that is clearly subject to the MIT license since it would meet criteria (3). Note, for example, if a solution includes open source code solely subject to a GNU General Public License, it would not meet criteria (3) and is disqualified. Note, if a solution includes source code with substantial similarity to other source code that does not meet criteria (3), it will be deemed a plagiarism and disqualifies that solution and all other solutions submitted by the contestant. A submitted solution is referred to as an “Entry”. A submitted solution that meets all 3 criteria is referred to as an “Eligible Entry”. Teradata's determination of the eligibility of Entries is final and binding. Note that an Eligible Contestant may submit more than one Entry.

4. Judging. The Judges will determine which of the Eligible Entries is the winning Eligible Entry based on the following criteria: (1) relevancy to one or more of the Challenge themes: data analytics utilizing artificial intelligence and/or cognitive services; (2) innovation exhibited in the problem statement and solution; (3) relevance to one or more Teradata markets (see www.teradata.com for product portfolio and target markets); and (4) the extent to which the proposed solution was realized during the Challenge Period as evidenced by the eligible Contestant’s presentation and solution demonstration on March 5, 2017 in the Contest Room. The Judges may disqualify any contestant or Entry that they, in their sole discretion, deem to not comply with this Agreement. Decisions of the Judges are final and binding on all contestants. A team of Eligible Contestants who submitted a winning Eligible Entry are referred to collectively herein as a “Winning Team” and the individual Eligible Contestants are referred to herein as a “Winner”.

5. Prizes. Each Eligible Contestant may claim the prize of one Amazon Echo Dot, having an approximate retail value of $50 each and one Partners Conference student pass, having an approximate retail value of $350 each. Each of the foregoing prizes is referred to herein as a “Prize”. A Participant has no right of substitution in cash or otherwise. Teradata reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value in the event of unavailability. All taxes imposed on a Prize are the sole responsibility of the Contestant, who warrants it will comply with all applicable tax laws. A Contestant will provide Teradata with all documentation and cooperation required by Teradata to comply with all applicable tax laws. If for any reason, a Contestant is unable or unwilling to claim a Prize in accordance with this Agreement, the Contestant forfeits the Prize. In the case of forfeiture by a Contestant, the Judges may, in their sole discretion, select an alternate Contestant. A Contestant is solely responsible for, and assumes, any and all risks, liabilities, and costs in any way associated with a Prize.

6. Winner Notification and Publicity. The Winning Teams will be announced in the Contest Room on or about 12:00 Pacific Time on March 5, 2017 Pacific Time. You may request the name of the Winners starting March 6, 2017. The Winners will personally pick up the Prizes in the Contest Room where photos of the Winners receiving the Prizes may be taken. For Teradata employees participating virtually, Winners will have their Prizes sent to their Teradata office location. On www.Teradata.com and in other publications, Teradata may, but is not required to, publicize the Winners’ names, pictures of the Winners receiving the Prizes, and a description of the Contest and the Winners. Each Winner grants to Teradata and its assigns all rights and permissions necessary for such publicity, including the use of his/her name and likeness, without any compensation to Winner.

7. Disposition of Entries. You may retain copies of your Entries and your data. You warrant to Teradata that you will not take any copies of the software hosted on the Contest Site.

8. Intellectual Property Rights. As a condition of participating in the Contest, you agree that your Entries are not submitted in confidence or in trust. You may use the software hosted on the Contest Site only during the Contest Period and only for participation in the Contest. Teradata, AWS, and their suppliers retain all rights in the software hosted on the Contest Site and, except for the express license granted in this section, no license is granted to you by implication, estoppel, or otherwise. You warrant that each of your Entries may be licensed by you to recipients of the Entry pursuant to the Apache License Version 2.0 without breach of any license applicable to any part of the Entry and without violation of anyone’s rights. As a condition of participating in the Contest, you hereby grant to Teradata a license to all intellectual property rights in and to each of your Entries pursuant to the Apache License Version 2.0 without any compensation to you for such license. Except for such express license, you retain all of your intellectual property rights in and to your Entries.

9. Host. You warrant to Teradata that you will fully comply with any AWS terms, conditions, and policies applicable to your use of the AWS System. AWS and Eventbrite are an independent contractors of Teradata and not have any right, power, or authority to act, or to create any obligation, on behalf of Teradata. Teradata’s use of AWS and Eventbrite is not an endorsement of either AWS or Eventbrite. You agree that AWS and Eventbrite are solely responsible for their own actions and omissions associated with the Contest and for any harm they may cause you (including any failure by them to comply with their terms of use or privacy policy) and that you will not attempt to hold Teradata responsible for any such action, omission or harm.

10. Problems. You agree that you will not attempt to hold Teradata responsible for any erroneous, late, lost, damaged, destroyed or misdirected registration, invitation, Entry, or notice regardless of how caused. You agree that you will not attempt to hold Teradata responsible for any room, hardware, software, or telecommunication unavailability, malfunction, error, delay, or failure regardless of how caused. If for any reason it becomes impossible or impractical to run the Contest as planned, such as the unavailability of rooms, hardware, software, or telecommunications or the discovery of events suggesting that the integrity of the Contest has been compromised, you agree that Teradata may in its sole discretion cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest. You agree to the foregoing regardless of its effect on your participation in the Contest, even if it totally precludes your participation in the Contest or your ability to claim the Prize.

11. Privacy. You have no expectation of privacy with respect to your activities in participating in the Contest during the Contest Period. You agree that Teradata and AWS may monitor your activities in the Contest Room and on the Contest Site during the Contest Period to ensure you comply with their respective agreements with you. You agree that personal data submitted with an entry, such as name, mailing address, phone number, and email address may be collected, transmitted, processed, stored, disclosed and otherwise used by Teradata, AWS, Eventbright, their respective affiliates, and their respective contractors for the purposes of conducting and administering the Contest. With respect to Teradata, this personal information is subject to Teradata’s Privacy Policy at: http://www.teradata.com/privacy/. AWS posts its privacy policy at http://aws.amazon.com/privacy. Eventbright posts its privacy policy at https://www.eventbrite.com/privacypolicy. In addition, Teradata may, but is not required to, use your personal data to contact you with respect to future Teradata recruiting efforts. Nothing concerning your participation in the Contest, including being the Winner, may be construed as a job offer or cause for any special consideration by Teradata in its recruiting efforts.

12. Indemnity. To the maximum extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold Teradata and its representatives harmless from and against any liability, claims, demands, losses, damages, costs and expenses resulting from any act, omission, or breach of this agreement by you in any way related to your participation in the Contest. “Representatives” refers to Teradata's officers, directors, employees, agents, and suppliers and to teradata’s affiliates and their officers, directors, employees, agents, and suppliers.

13. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. To the maximum extent permitted by law, TERADATA AND ITS REPRESENTATIVES WILL NOT BE LIABLE TO YOU, OR ANYONE CLAIMING THROUGH YOU, FOR ANY DAMAGES OF ANY NATURE in any way related to your participation in the Contest in excess of your necessary and ACTUAL OUT-OF-POCKET COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH PARTICIPATING IN THE CONTEST. WITHOUT LIMITING THE FOREGOING, To the maximum extent permitted by law, TERADATA AND ITS REPRESENTATIVES WILL NOT BE LIABLE TO YOU, OR ANYONE CLAIMING THROUGH YOU, FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, SPECIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

14. General. This Agreement is the complete agreement between you and Teradata regarding this Contest and supersedes any other description of the Contest. California law (excluding its choice of law rules) governs the interpretation and enforcement of this Agreement. If an adjudicator of competent jurisdiction finds any portion of this Agreement unenforceable, that portion is to be enforced only to the extent permissible and the remainder of this Agreement will continue in full force and effect. Any failure to enforce or exercise any provision of this Agreement will not constitute a waiver of that or any other provision or right.

15. Arbitration. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE RIGHTS TO LITIGATE, SEEK INJUNCTIVE RELIEF OR MAKE ANY OTHER RECOURSE TO JUDICIAL OR ANY OTHER PROCEDURE IN CASE OF DISPUTES OR CLAIMS RELATED IN ANY WAY TO THIS CONTEST ARE HEREBY EXCLUDED, AND YOU EXPRESSLY WAIVE ANY AND ALL SUCH RIGHTS. You and Teradata agree that all disputes and claims between you and Teradata related in any way to the Contest will be submitted to Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services, Inc. (“JAMS”) for binding arbitration under its rules then in effect in the San Diego, California area, before one arbitrator to be mutually agreed upon by both parties. There shall be no right or authority for any claims to be arbitrated as a class member in any purported class or representative proceeding. The parties agree to share equally in the arbitration costs incurred.
